Milli Costume is popular!

Sorry for the terrible pic

Last year I made this costume for my daughter and since finding a good Team Umizoomi costume of Milli is still difficult I thought I'd post a mink to my old post as well as a link to pattern I used as well as the fabric print I created for it.

The pattern was McCalls 4006
A simple a-line dress but I widened the bottom by two sizes to make it look more exaggerated.

You can order the print at Spoonflower HERE (I've adjusted the scale so that the flowers are better to scale, 3in across instead of 6)
And there are two other options if you are interested one with a yellow center and one with a purple center, I have to make then available to sell by ordering a swatch of them so let me know if you are interested in buying them.

Answer to: Women Have More OptionsThan Men

Although it has been quite a while since I read This Article about how LDS men feel that women have more options than men do, it has been bugging me that no one has really given an adequate response. So here is my sincere attempt to do so.

One interviewee complained that that it's not factored in that men are expected to work for 50 YEARS and another talked about how his mother went back to school and has done a lot of things that she wants to do while his dad is still at the same job he's always done.  (Insert worlds smallest fiddle here ;))

I'm willing to give it to them on a technicality.  Yes, technically, women have more options for what is expected of them in our culture.  Men are expected to get a job in a career that they will hopefully be at for 50 years or more once they are married, in general.  Also in general, women are expected to work until children come along and then stay at home to raise them or to divide herself between the home and work if one income is considered inadequate. (I know of a family of 8 living well on less than $28k and one income but that's another story)  Once the kids are at least all in school or grown she is then free to pursue her own wants and desires, go back to school, start a career, do humanitarian work, etc.  So many more options for the women while the men have to work at the same boring job for 50+ years.

I do understand the men's frustration, it is a lot of pressure to be the sole provider and to hopefully find a career path that you love so that you actually enjoy going to that job for all those years.  It can be hard to come home after a long day of work and shift gears to being a husband and father.  I've seen how stressful it can be for my own wonderful husband and how sometimes he just wants to hole up away from everyone and zone out because of it.  I get it, I really do and I feel for you.

Here's my problem, these guys were looking at the situation from a very self-centered position. It's a "the grass is greener on the other side" point of view with all the focus on the negative for the men and the "get to's" for the women.  Do women have more options?  Yes.  The key isn't that we have more options but WHY we do.  Why women have more options can be summed up in the one word that is most expected of women.  What is this word you ask, if you are asking I can almost guarantee that you are not only a man but one that's a little clueless as well, just sayin'.  The word is selfless.  We women stay at home with the kids, selflessly, because we as a culture believe it to be best for our children.  We work and put our kids in daycare, selflessly, because we don't want to tell our wonderful husbands that we just don't have enough on his one income so he'd better get another.  We go back to school, often because we want to, selflessly, help our husbands fund our retirement and our kids college tuition when we, selflessly, start a career after several decades away from the public workforce even though we worry about being too old and irrelevant.

Is it all out of selflessness, of course not, I love being home with my kids, I even love the sleepless nights when it's just me and my nursing baby.  The selfless part comes in when after a long day of kids shows, kids songs, kids games and activities and a WHOLE lot of cleaning up after said kids, instead of saying "Tag, you're it" and running out the door for a little me or at least adult time, I cook dinner, kiss my husband when he gets home, help my son with his homework, spend some family time with everyone, tuck the kids in and then hopefully spend a few minutes with just my husband before I pass out from exhaustion.  (I literally fall asleep on the couch while talking with him far more often than I care to admit.)  I wear clothes that are covered in food, dirt, spit up, poop, etc.  because if I changed I'd only get it on the next outfit within minutes anyway.  I take the kids with me to run errands that would only take me 5 minutes to an hour that now take me 30 minutes to three hours because I know have to take the time to get all of the kids in the car, belted in, unbuckled, back out of the car, into a cart or stroller for the little ones, field there many requests and questions, keep them from breaking anything and especially from unintentionally stealing anything at the checkout, often while at least one of them is crying, and then it's back to the car to load them in, load the stuff, unload the kids, unload the stuff, all without losing anything or anyone and hopefully without anything getting hurt or broken.

When your wife needs to go out when your home does she ask you to watch the kids while when you have somewhere to go it's just assumed that you will be going without the kids and she will be taking care of them?  That's how I've found it to be in most households and yet you BOTH are the parents and you are both outside of your "regular working hours".  Technically shouldn't that make that time a 50/50 endeavor?  A mothers job is 24/7 and it is emotionally and physically (and mentally and spiritually) draining work.

Things do get easier as the kids get older, in a way, they can help more, you don't have to do everything for them now but then new needs come up more emotional, growing up needs which I understand to be just as hard, only different.

Our cultural expectations for both men and women have changed a lot since our grandparents were kids but both of us feel the pressure and both of us have to be selfless often in order to create a greater whole.  Just because those expectations are different doesn't mean that one of us got the better end of the bargain, only that we need to talk to our significant others to figure out what works best for each of us in our own families.

More Veggies Please!

Want a way to get more veggies into your kids?

These great veggie burgers can fit the bill, they taste great and can be used for more than just burgers.  I took the spicy black bean burger and put it on top of rice and then topped off with avocado, salsa and a little sour cream for a quick "mexican haystack" or on top of a couple corn tortillas with a fried egg on top and salsa and such for a great breakfast or brunch.  DELISH!!

I got the Morning Star Farms Veggie Burgers free as part of a campaign with BzzAgent, check them out if you want to know how you can try out and share great products.

Delicious Potato Pancake Twist

Have you ever had potato pancakes?  Delish, right?  Well, my baby girl was asking for pancakes and though I knew she meant the traditional breakfast kind for some reason it got me thinking out of the box today.  I wish I had a picture of these amazing pancakes but they came out all mangled looking because I was in a hurry trying to cook while holding my 3 month old and calming my crying, impatient 2 yr old DD.

So here is what I came up with:

Pumpkin Latkes w/ Browned Butter &Sage Sauce

You can make these many different ways but I used hashbrowns, canned pumpkin, super thin sliced and chopped onion, egg and a little flour.  Since my DD is going gluten free right now I didn't use wheat flour but the kind of flour doesn't really matter since it's just a binder, along with the egg.

I rarely measure so I'd guess that I used about 4 cups hashbrowns, 2 cups canned pumpkin, 1/3 of a large onion, 1 egg, and 1/4 flour.  Mix and cook in a frying pan till golden brown on both sides.

For the sauce you just need butter, browned, a little brown sugar and ground sage.  The brown sugar doesn't mix in with the oil so just make sure you get a bit of both when you drizzle it lightly over the top.  (I'm working on finding a good emulsifier for this recipe.)

It's really that simple and delicious.  I can't wait until fall when I can make it with grated fresh pumpkin.  :-)

Review Best Razor EVER!!! & Bzz Agent

I just got the Shick Hydro Silk razor, with replaceable heads in the mail from BzzAgent and it really is the best razor I have EVER used, it has a water activated lubricant that feels wonderfully slimey, which sounds gross but it really feels wonderful and it glides along your skin so smoothly you almost can't even feel it.  I was able to shave my legs in almost half the time it usually takes and my legs were smooth a little longer than usual.  This is definitely my new razor, I am truly converted.  That it comes with a suction cup holder to mount it on your shower wall is just a super wonderful extra bonus.

I recieved this razor for free from BzzAgent to try, review and share, click to learn more about the Shick Hydro Silk razor & click to learn more about BzzAgent.

Review Loreal BB Cream & SheSpeaks

I have the wonderful opportunity to tell you about Loreal's new BB Cream, BB cream is all the rage now, and for good reason, and Loreal's version doesn't disappoint.  It's a four in one cream that "Primes, Perfects, Hydrates, Corrects".  It does feel like you aren't wearing anything and looks really great, just know the the hydrates aspect is more over time than when you first apply and it has a matte finish so make sure that you moisturize about 1 minute before applying and that you exfoliate regularly.  This is not a concealer so although it does diminish imperfections it does not cover them up and most of the correcting claim has to do with the fact that it is considered to nourish your skin so that it gives you nicer skin overall after prolonged use.

All in all, I really do love this product and as someone who is not a fan of almost all foundations that is truly saying something.  It comes in formulas for youth through to aging & at $10.95 msrp fir a cream that does so much it's definitely worth the investment.  Visit Loreal's site to learn more about it.

I got this product free from SheSpeaks to review and share, SheSpeaks is a great program where you can learn about and try new products and then share them with the people you know.  If you are interested you can check it out on their website, don't forget to mention where you heard about them.  :-)

Basic Baby Needs- Baby Care 101

When I had my first baby I got a lot of somewhat helpful tips like if they're fussy it might be gas.  Somewhat helpful if it's actually gas, not so much if it's something else, like tired.  Over the years and through plenty of trial and error with 4 babies I now can take care of #4 with almost no fussing because I've finally figured out how to tell what he needs before he gets upset.

First off, I have to recommend the video above about the 5 baby words, this helped me out a ton with babies #1 and 3.  It makes a big difference to get the DVD because then you can hear it better and for longer, helping you to be even more in tune to their sound cues.

This only helped a little with babies #2 and 4 because neither have been as verbal as infants.  #2 was my easiest because she naturally fell into her own schedule and was so consistent that I could tell the time by her and if I ever wasn't sure I'd just look at the time.  #4 has been easy mostly because of everything I learned from my previous 3, he doesn't make the sounds as much but he gives physical clues that I recognized from the others.

If they are hungry the first sign is usually a slight sucking sound or they stick out their tongue.

#1 only hours old  "feed me, Mama"

If they need to burp you might hear a high pitched "eh" or they might hold their head up and kind of stretch out their necks, it sort of looks like their trying to stretch up to get a breath.

If they have intestinal gas they may grunt or stretch and kick their legs.  I've heard a lot of ways to help them with this but I've found that the best way is usually to lay them on their backs and hold their knees up to their tummies and rock them side to side, the rocking is just for comforting.  Some babies prefer being held football style and patting their back or bum while you walk around or holding them tummy down across your lap and patting their bum.

If they are tired or sleepy then they start to make lopsided expressions like one eye might droop or their smile might be crooked.  They also might get a worried expression, which really just means that they are getting over stimulated but that's often from getting tired.

He may be smiling but he's getting tired.

If they get fussy out of the blue, hardly any signs before they are full on fussy or crying, then it almost always means that they are uncomfortable and most likely need their diaper changed.  It can also mean that they are hot, cold, or something else is making them uncomfortable.

All babies are different, some are self soothers while others need a pacifier or swaddling, some fall into a natural schedule while others are more unpredictable, some prefer their own space while others love to be held.  I've had each one of those and seen many more and while they are all different they all have basic needs and basic ways of letting you know which one it is.  I hope that you've found these tips to be helpful, they sure made my life easier.

Carmel Comfort & Torani

Remember this post on RICE PUDDING?

Well I got a couple bottles of Torani, sugar-free Pumpkin Pie and this

so instead of adding cinnamon and sugar I added it and YUM-O, it was delish.  I also cooked it with vanilla soy milk instead of cow's milk, soy milk has about the same amount of protein and calcium but even with the added sugar it has much less sugar then plain milk and when I'm making a sweet treat I like to save the sugar anywhere it won't be noticed.  For anyone trying to cut out even more sugar the sugar-free pumpkin pie was amazing as well.

You can get 10% off HERE on all Torani products.

I got the bottles through SheSpeaks, a program where you can receive free products to review and share with friends, if you are interested in this program check out their website and don't forget to mention that you heard about it here.

14 Rules for Raising Sons

My first baby when he was 14 mths.

I found this WONDERFUL POST on

about 25 rules for mom raising daughters and it got me thinking about similar rules for raising my sons, since I'm due to have my second son next month.  You should really read it, it's a beautiful post.

So here's my 14 rules for moms raising sons:

Milli Halloween Costume Done!!!!!!

Sorry for the terrible pic

I did it!  I finished the Milli Umizoomi costume in record time.  The hard part was the cap,

Halloween Costume Project

Can you guess what my 4 yr old daughter is going to be for halloween this year?  Guesses on Facebook were:  Little Bo Peep, Little Miss Muffet, Dora, Hello Kitty and Stephanie from Lazy Town.

I thought the fabric was a dead giveaway, esp. since I had to design it myself and order it from Spoonflower, there just wasn't any print that was anywhere close.  (It didn't turn out nearly as bright as I thought it would though.)

Give Up?

Cheap Foaming Handwash Refill

So I love those foaming handsoaps but I hate, Hate, HATE the price tag so I decided to refill them myself on the cheap and it turns out to be ridiculously easy.  Here is what you need:

One Empty Foaming Dispenser
Liquid Soap, any kind will do
Water

That's really it and since the Suave was one sale for a buck and in a scent that not only do I like but my husband won't mind it either, I used it.  You can also use Castile Soap, shampoo, melaleuca hand soap or whatever.

Now to fill it up:

Really, that little, I swear that the companies that sell these things must think we are big suckers to charge more for something that is 99% water.  If you use liquid castile soap you only need about 2 TBSP and shampoo lathers a lot so you can use less as well, just pour some in and if it's thicker foam than you want you can always use less soap the next time and if it's too weak then a tiny bit more soap.

Now fill it up with water, I was impatient the first time and just filled it up until most of the bubbles had poured out of the top but if you fill it up slower then you don't get too many bubbles and there's no mess.

(The foamer in the pictures was filled with dishsoap, hence the color difference from the shampoo.)
